The blazer is the highest-leverage garment in men’s style. It’s the single item that turns clothes into an outfit, and it does it in the two seconds it takes to put on at the door.
Below: what actually counts as a blazer, the fit rules, and seven ways to wear one that cover most of adult life.
Blazer vs. sport coat vs. suit jacket
- Blazer — traditionally navy, solid, with metal or contrasting buttons. Descended from naval uniform. The most versatile of the three.
- Sport coat — patterned or textured (tweed, herringbone, houndstooth), designed to be worn with contrasting trousers.
- Suit jacket — half of a matched suit. Worn alone it looks orphaned, because the fabric is finer than any trouser you’d pair it with. This is the most common mistake in the category.
In modern usage the terms blur, and “blazer” now covers most odd jackets. But the suit-jacket rule still holds: don’t wear a suit jacket as a blazer.
Structured vs. unstructured
Unstructured — soft shoulder, no padding, little or no canvas. Feels like a cardigan with lapels. Best for smart casual and business casual. Buy this one first.
Structured — padded shoulder, full canvas, defined chest. Reads more formal, holds its shape better, flatters narrower frames. Best for business and formal settings.
The four fit rules
- Shoulder seam ends exactly where your shoulder ends. Cannot be altered — buy for this.
- Sleeve ends at the wrist bone, showing a quarter to half inch of shirt cuff.
- Length covers your seat. Modern cuts run slightly shorter; anything above the seat is a fashion cut with a short shelf life.
- Button — with the middle (or only) button fastened, you should be able to slip a flat hand between the button and your chest. Tighter and it pulls into an X.
Always unbutton when seated. Always. A buttoned jacket while sitting strains the fabric and looks stiff.
Seven ways to wear one
1. Over a white t-shirt. Navy unstructured blazer, plain white tee, dark denim or five-pocket trousers, white leather sneakers. The most-worn smart-casual outfit of the last decade.
2. Over an oxford-cloth button-down. The office default. Add wool trousers and brown loafers.
3. Over a fine-gauge knit. Merino crewneck or roll-neck under a blazer. Autumn and winter’s best combination — texture without bulk.
4. Over a polo. Summer. Fine-knit polo in navy or olive, unstructured cotton or linen blazer, chinos, loafers with no visible socks.
5. With a shirt and tie, no suit. Structured navy blazer, white or blue dress shirt, knit or grenadine tie, grey wool trousers. One notch below a suit, and often the better choice for client meetings.
6. With denim. Dark, unwashed, no distressing. The blazer must be textured — hopsack, tweed, linen — because a smooth blazer against denim reads as a mismatch.
7. Layered under an overcoat. Winter. Ensure the coat’s shoulders accommodate the blazer beneath; try both on together before buying.
The three-blazer wardrobe
- Navy unstructured wool. Buy first. Works with everything, all year.
- Charcoal or mid-grey. The second-most versatile; pairs with colours navy struggles against.
- A textured option — hopsack for summer, tweed for winter. The one that adds interest.
Three blazers is a complete rotation. See the capsule wardrobe guide for how they fit the wider system, and the navy pairing guide for colour combinations.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a blazer and a suit jacket?
A blazer is a standalone jacket, traditionally navy with contrasting buttons, designed to be worn with different trousers. A suit jacket is half of a matched set — worn alone it looks orphaned because its fabric is finer than any trouser you’d pair with it.
Can you wear a blazer with jeans?
Yes, with two conditions: the denim should be dark, unwashed and undistressed, and the blazer should be textured — hopsack, tweed, or linen. A smooth worsted blazer against denim reads as a mismatch.
Should you button a blazer when sitting down?
No. Always unbutton when you sit. A buttoned jacket while seated strains the fabric across the chest and looks stiff. Re-button when you stand.
How should a blazer fit?
The shoulder seam should end exactly where your shoulder ends, the sleeve at your wrist bone showing a quarter-inch of shirt cuff, the length should cover your seat, and you should be able to slip a flat hand between the fastened button and your chest.
What colour blazer should I buy first?
Navy, unstructured, in wool. It works with grey, charcoal, stone, olive and white trousers, in every season, from smart casual to business casual. It is the single most useful garment in men’s style.
TL;DR
- Buy first: navy, unstructured, wool
- Never: wear a suit jacket as a blazer
- Fit: shoulder seam at the shoulder, hand’s width under the button
- Always: unbutton when seated
- With denim: textured blazer only
