The Shift Away From Polyester: What’s Actually Happening

There is a story going around that men are abandoning polyester. That natural fibres are surging back, that the market has turned, that the synthetic era is quietly ending.

It is a good story and the numbers do not support it. Polyester reached roughly 59% of all fibre produced globally in 2024 — about 78 million tonnes, an all-time record. Global fibre production hit 132 million tonnes and is projected to reach around 169 million by 2030 on current trends. Cotton, by contrast, slipped to about 19%.

So the shift is not happening at the level of global production. It is happening somewhere more specific, and more interesting: at the considered end of the market, and in European regulation. Both of those matter for what ends up in your wardrobe.

Here is the honest version — what polyester actually does well, what it does badly, where the pressure is genuinely building, and how to think about it when you are standing in a shop.

What polyester is

Polyester is a plastic. Specifically it is polyethylene terephthalate — PET, the same polymer as a drinks bottle — extruded into fine filaments and woven or knitted into cloth. Roughly 88% of it is made directly from fossil feedstock.

It went from a novelty in the 1950s to the dominant fibre on Earth because it is cheap, strong, dimensionally stable, and it does not wrinkle. Those are real advantages and worth being clear about before criticising it.

What polyester genuinely does well

An honest account has to start here, because the anti-synthetic argument is often overstated.

  • Durability. Polyester is stronger than cotton or wool and resists abrasion well. A polyester-reinforced garment lasts longer at stress points.
  • Dimensional stability. It does not shrink, stretch out of shape, or wrinkle much. For a garment that must look identical after fifty washes, this is genuinely useful.
  • Moisture wicking. In performance wear, polyester moves sweat off the skin faster than cotton. For running, hiking, or the gym, it is the better fibre and it is not close.
  • Cost. It makes clothing affordable for people for whom $200 wool trousers are not a live option. This matters and it is often skated over in fabric moralising.
  • Recycled polyester exists and accounted for roughly 6.9% of all fibre produced in 2024, mostly from plastic bottles.

What polyester does badly

Breathability

Polyester fibres are hydrophobic — they repel water rather than absorbing it. In performance wear that is the point. In a shirt worn under a jacket for ten hours, it means heat and humidity sit against your skin rather than moving through the cloth.

Odour

Because it does not absorb moisture, sweat sits on the fibre surface where bacteria multiply, and polyester holds the resulting smell tenaciously through washing. Wool does the opposite — it absorbs moisture into the fibre and is naturally antibacterial, which is why a merino shirt can be worn for days.

Microplastic shedding

Synthetic textiles shed microfibres during washing and wear. According to Pew, fibre shedding from synthetics across the product life cycle is the fourth-largest source of microplastic pollution in the EU, and synthetics make up around 60% of clothing and 70% of household textiles.

Research into the human health effects of microplastics is still developing and it would be overstating things to claim the picture is settled. What is established is that the shedding is real, substantial, and now a live regulatory target.

End of life

Polyester does not biodegrade meaningfully. Blended fabrics — a cotton-polyester shirt, say — are also far harder to recycle than single-fibre garments, because separating the fibres is difficult and expensive. A 100% wool jumper and a 100% cotton shirt both have end-of-life routes. A 60/40 blend largely does not.

Where the shift is actually happening

1. Regulation, which is where the real pressure is

The EU’s Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation came into force in 2024 and names textiles as a priority category, with a delegated act for textiles expected by 2027. The direction of travel is toward requirements on durability, recyclability and fibre shedding — which would force synthetic fabrics to be redesigned rather than banned.

This is the most consequential thing happening in the category, and it operates on manufacturers rather than on shoppers.

2. The premium and considered end of the market

Among men who buy fewer, better things, the move toward wool, cotton, linen and leather is genuine. It is driven by performance as much as ethics — natural fibres simply feel and behave better in tailoring — but it is a small share of global volume, which is why it does not register in the production statistics.

3. Established standards

Frameworks like the Global Organic Textile Standard and the Responsible Wool Standard have given natural fibres something synthetics largely lack: verifiable claims. That is slowly reshaping what brands can credibly say.

The practical rule: natural fibres for anything worn against the skin all day or expected to last years. Synthetics where the technical performance is the actual point.

Reading a label without being fooled

  • Check the percentage, not the vibe. “Cotton-rich” can mean 60% cotton, 40% polyester. The number is on the care label.
  • Small nylon content is often good. 2–5% nylon in wool socks or at the elbows of knitwear adds real durability. This is not the same as a 50% acrylic jumper.
  • “Performance” and “technical” usually mean polyester. Fine in gym kit, less so in a dress shirt.
  • “Recycled polyester” is better than virgin, not equivalent to natural. It still sheds microfibres and still does not biodegrade.
  • Blends are harder to recycle than single-fibre garments, whatever the marketing says.

Reducing shedding from what you already own

You do not need to throw out your existing clothes — the most wasteful response to this information would be replacing a functional wardrobe.

  1. Wash synthetics less often. Most shedding happens in the machine.
  2. Wash cold and on a shorter cycle. Heat and agitation increase fibre release.
  3. Fill the drum. A fuller load means less fabric-on-fabric friction per garment.
  4. Use a filter bag or a washing machine microfibre filter if you own a lot of synthetics.
  5. Air-dry. Tumble dryers are significant shedding events.
